Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) attractive and scarce antique map "Bowles's New Medium Map of Wiltshire." Offered with hand colour and matted ready to frame (the map is not laid down so can easily be removed from the mat if desired). DATE PRINTED: 1785, dated on the map from a plate first published in 1767. SIZE: The printed area including titles is approx. 9" x 13.5" (23 cm x 33.5 cm) with a centre fold as issued. The mat is approximately 35.5 x 46 cm, 14 x 18 inches.ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn by Emanuel Bowen. Emanuel Bowen (1694 – 8 May 1767) was a Welsh map engraver, who achieved the unique distinction of becoming Royal Mapmaker to both to King George II of Great Britain and Louis XV of France. Bowen was highly regarded by his contemporaries for producing some of the largest, most detailed and most accurate maps of his era. He is known to have worked with most British cartographic figures of the period including John Owen and Herman Moll. PROVENANCE: The map was published in "Bowles's new medium English atlas; or, Complete set of maps of the counties of England and Wales Divided into their respective hundreds, wapontakes, wards, rapes, lathes &c." This map is based on those in Emanuel and Thomas Bowen's "Atlas Anglicanus" which was published in 1767. They are distinguished primarily by having newly engraved cartouches and distances from London added to towns. Both are scarce publications.TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good. Suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase.
