1864 print: UNION GENERALS casualties at CEDAR CREEK: Bidwell, Ricketts, Grover

Description: Union Officers Harper's Weekly 1864 This is a single sheet only which is 160 years old. It was published in the Nov. 12, 1864, issue of Harper's Weekly, Americas leading illustrated paper during the 1800s. It measures 11 x 16 inches in size, is in excellent condition, and makes an interesting display piece. It presents nice portraits of these four Union officers: * Brigadier-General James Ricketts, of the Sixth Corps; wounded and taken prisoner at Bull Run, later served at Monocacy and subsequent Shenandoah Valley battles; recently wounded again in the Battle of Cedar Creek on Oct. 19, 1864, with his life remaining in doubt. * The Late Brigadier-General Bidwell, 49th New York Volunteers, killed in battle at Cedar Creek, while in command of the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, Sixth Corps * Brigadier-General Cuvier Grover, formerly of the 19th Corps, Army of the Gulf; lost an arm at Cedar Creek * The Late Colonel Charles R. Lowell, Jun., killed at Cedar Creek. The sheet has short, interesting biographical articles on the three Generals listed above. Items about Gen. Ricketts and Gen. Bidwell appear on the front side of the page along with the portraits, and the story on Gen. Grover appears on its reverse. Some biographical details on Col. Lowell apparently appeared elsewhere in the Harpers issue, but is not included with this print. However, online info shows that Col. Lowell was among the Union officers who were killed at Cedar Creek. [gsp2277] _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
