Description: A 1911 early novel by the Irish clergyman, sailing enthusiast and prolific author James Owen Hannay (1865-1950), writing under the pseudonym of George A. Birmingham. A tale of country life in Ireland and sailing among the islands of the author's creation 'Rosnacree Bay' (a setting he used for a couple of his novels). Please see my other items for more interesting and/or collectable items, including lots more 'sailing' books and another book by this author, as I will always try and combine the delivery to save you money. On Sale is an undated probable 1911 first edition of * The Inviolable Sanctuary *, by George A. Birmingham, illustrated with a colour frontispiece of two people in a 'Dublin Bay Water Wag' boat, and a sketch map of the the coast and islands of the 'South Part of Rosnacree Bay', published by Thomas Nelson & Sons, London, [first published undated in 1911] this one is undated with no other editions or impressions listed, but the binding looks right for circa 1910 and the publisher's booklist at the end show as "Forthcoming Volumes" books that were first published in 1910, so this is probably the first edition, size approximately 7-1/2 inches x 5 inches, with 369 pages plus a 14-page undated publisher's booklist. The vibrant-blue cloth-covered hardcover with a gilt spine title and impressed decoration to the front and spine, is rubbed and bumped on the extremities mainly the spine-ends, very sound and not split along the spine edges, gilt title bright and clearly legible, slight darkening to the spine, not faded, slightly marked, otherwise generally bright and clean and tidy (see photo's 1 & 3). Inside is complete, publisher's illustrated endpapers sound and not split, has the decorative bookplate to the front fixed endpaper of J.W. Arrowsmith (head of the well known Bristol publishing house of the same name), no other writing or graffiti, hinges very sound with boards well attached, binding tight with all pages well attached, is missing a small bottom corner tip of one leaf well away from the text and probably done at the binding stage by opening with a paper-knife, else pages not torn, corners not turned, pale age-toning and foxing to the page edges else generally not tanned or foxed, not heavily read, otherwise generally bright and clean and tidy.
