Exceedingly rare, only 73 examples of the J-1000 model were produced in its sparingly short production run from 1992-1994 in Gibson's Bozeman, MT factory. Designed by Ren Ferguson, a legendary figure in acoustic guitar circles and a longtime Master Luthier overseeing Gibson's acoustic production, the J-1000 is an extremely versatile, powerful instrument. Featuring a cutaway J-185 body, lightly scaled down from a J-200, this Gibson has a 16" lower bout width, measuring 4.5" deep at the lower bout with a full 25 1/2" scale length. Tonewoods include a AAA-grade spruce top, AAA Indian rosewood back and sides, a mahogany/walnut neck with a substantial soft V profile carve, and a rosewood fingerboard and bridge. Offering an astounding sonic range, this Gibson yields incredible power and projection with ease, yet is also perfectly suited for very refined, delicate chording and fingerstyle playing. The instrument has a broad spectrum quality to the sound, with bold bass register kick and sparkling, airy treble cut. There are a sparse couple lines of lacquer checking behind the bridge and on the inside edge of the cutaway, and the gloss on the neck profile is flawless. Of the 73 examples produced, it's highly likely this J-1000 is one of the cleanest in existence.
