In 2003, America celebrated the 200th Anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase. This celebration called for a new series of coins to be released from the Mint. The Mint released several new coins beginning in 2004 and ending in 2005 that were part of the Westward Journey Nickels. The Westward Journey Nickels began a two year long run of commemorative nickels that were put into circulation. These coins were used to commemorate the Westward Journey that was taken by Lewis and Clark and were only in circulation for two years total The Lewis and Clark Expedition was commemorated on the 2004 Westward Journey Nickel series. This special coin program celebrated the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which took place between 1804 and 1806. It marked the first time the nickel design had changed in 66 years.
