Description: 52 Issues of The Detroit Times Sunday Comics Section (The Comic Weekly): December 2 1956 - November 24 1957. More than 650 pages of full-color comics and advertisements (both color and black-and-white). Each of the 52 issues consists of 12-16 pages, most often 14 pages, the variation usually due to the size and number of advertisements for a huge variety of 1950s products (see photos). This is a bound volume. Featured comics include: Blondie, Beetle Bailey, Ripley's Believe It Or Not, Heart of Juliet Jones, Bringing Up Father, Little Iodine, Big Ben Bolt, Roy Rogers, Henry, Popeye, Annie Rooney, Tim Tyler's Luck, Katzenjammer Kids, The Lone Ranger, Tillie the Toiler, Prince Valiant, They'll Do It Every Time, Hi and Lois, Hubert, Steve Canyon, Flash Gordon, Buz Sawyer, The Phantom, Snuffy Smith, The Little King, Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Uncle Remus, Scamp, and others. The advertisements, some full-page, are wonderful; they include Ford ads for the New 1957 Ranchero (first sold in December 1956) and the debut of a revolutionary new Insect Repellent: OFF. The overall condition is somewhere between fair and good. Most pages (more than 85%) are in good to very good condition: no water damage, writing, discoloration or odor; some small chips or tears at page edges consistent with 67-year-old newsprint. There are some tears at the bottom near the gutter. Old plastic tape, or evidence of its use, can be found here and there. In three locations near edges there is evidence of small worm borings. Limited instances of more significant damage are addressed below. 1) Although this is a bound volume, and the binding is strong and tight, the front cover is missing and the rear cover is worn, creased, torn, and is missing its bottom corner. (Covers are/were nothing more than thick cardboard.) 2) As a consequence of 1), pages 1 and 2 of the first issue (12/2/56) are missing, and page 3 is missing its top corner.3) As a consequence of 1), the first three issues (12/2, 12/9 and 12/16) have significant edge tears and corner damage. This damage diminishes to almost nothing as one gets closer to the beginning of the 12/23 issue. 4) Because the rear cover is missing its bottom corner, the bottom page corners of issues 11/10, 11/17 and 11/24 become more damaged as one gets closer to the end of the bound volume.5) The last two pages (one leaf) of the 10/27 issue are missing; pages 13-14 (one leaf) of the 11/24 issue are mostly missing; two pages (one leaf) of the 3/31 issue are loose, with significant edge damage.6) Issue 4/7, pages 11-12: a large piece, approximately 1/3 of the leaf, is missing. 7) Issue 8/18, pages 5-6: leaf is present but torn in half. 8) Issue 9/1, pages 5-6: the bottom corner is missing.9) Issue 9/22, pages 9-10: damage to fore-edge.10) Issues 10/20 and 11/3: a long tear on pages 5-6 and 9-10, respectively. We have done our best to describe this volume completely and honestly. While it is far from perfect, most of the interior is in remarkably good condition. It is difficult to find a full year's worth of vintage Sunday Comics from the mid-50s in any condition. Reading these comic strips in their original format, with their large and beautifully executed illustrations, takes one back to a different era.
