Description: Authentic Antique 19th Century Circus Sideshow Fat Lady CDV Photograph Caption: "Maggie Clark." / "Star Photograph Gallery, C.L. Weed, 120 Michigan Avenue, Detroit, Mich." NOTE... this "C.L. Weed" is NOT Charles Leander Weed, 1824-1903. Extensive research indicates that the famous California photographer C.L. Weed "married Sarah P. Irish in the mid-1870s, and the couple lived quietly in Oakland until the photographer’s death on August 31, 1903."THIS other C.L. Weed of this Detroit location created a few other Carte de Visite (CDV) studio portraits featuring similar Circus Sideshow Curiosities / Freakshow Photos circa the 1870s. I've not found another copy of this CDV. "Freak Show" Photographer Charles Eisenmann created a similar CDV of Maggie Clark circa 1870's.FROM Directory of Early Michigan Photographers. David V. Tinder: "Weed, Clarence L. ... was born in Michigan about 1857. He was single and living in a large hotel in 1880, and he belonged to the Photographers’ Association of America in 1881. “STAR Photograph & Tintype Gallery ...” or “STAR PHOTOGRAPH GALLERY, C. L. WEED, 120 Michigan Ave., Detroit, Mich. Commercial Work a Specialty.” was printed on card and cabinet mounts. These were used for portraits of ordinary people as well as for advertising or souvenir photographs of entertainers such as the Hurtt Family of musicians, Little Flora the child snake charmer, the living skeleton George Price, the very heavy Maggie Clark, May Heller the second sight seer, General Cardenas and other midgets. Her father emigrated from Ireland, and Clara was born in Michigan to a Canadian mother in 1869. She married Clarence in 1892 or early in 1893, and their children were born in Detroit: Harold on March 27, 1897, and Marian in 1904. Clarence was recognized as the founder when the Michigan Photographers’ Association was organized in 1895, and he presented the association with the Founder’s Cup, a silver loving cup for which the professionals were to compete each year until it was awarded to one photographer for the second time. He addressed the first convention of the MPA about “Platinum Toning” in January of 1896. During the second convention in Detroit a year later, there was “... an exhibition of a collection of pictures gathered by C. L. Weed, of the American Aristotype Company, showing the evolution in photography since the time of Daguerre to the present day...." View More Circus, Theater, etc. Cards...
