Description: An amazing well kept and totally complete 1830s or earlier Large Surveying Compass and hardwood (mahogany ?) Case. I have never seen a nicer one on line.....or sale other. It is very similar to the Surveying Instrument that Abraham Lincoln used in 1833-34....... (see the LAST PHOTO, this is of his Instrument in Lincoln museum at New Salem or also shown in Springfield museum). The key to the Case is there and operates perfectly. Compass works very well and smooth. The Cover trips a "lockdown" on the needle for travel. The Compass Cover shows some corrosion and there is a damage to the case at one end as shown in the photos. The leather strap looks very original and is worn and not complete, but buckle shows the time period. It is original as acquired at an estate auction 15 years ago, no restoration, no polishing, by me.....only a dry cloth wipe. I showed it at a couple ReEnactments where I was a Surveyor/Mapmaker demonstrating the time period when the PLSS Surveys were being done of the Midwest (1800-1840). No overseas buyers, will not ship out of U.S.
