Description: BEACON OF HOPE CHAPEL SINGERS "OVER THE WALLS" This group of talented and dedicated inmates of the Kansas State Penitentiary in Lansing, Kansas are literally singing for their chapel. The group, founded by another inmate, the late Robert L. Covington, has been in existence as a traveling group since 1960, and as such, has appeared in concerts before civic, church and school group, all over the state of Kansas. Though the penitentiary was built in 1864, there has never been a chapel built within its’ walls. The 1968 session of the State Legslature gave its permission to raze the oid "jail" or maximum security building in the center of the prison compound so that on this site might be built this much needed for all faiths chapel facility. State finances would not permit underwriting the expenditure, so Warden R. J. Gaffney gave his permission and the choir readily agreed to appear wherever invited in the state to help raise the funds to build the chapel. A committee of interested citizens was formed and has engaged in many activities to raise the necessary junds. At nearly every performance the choir was besieged with requests for an album. This is the result.
