Description: The Civil Aeronautics Board granted Braniff International exemptions to serve four major cities on the European Continent — Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt and Paris — from Dallas / Fort Worth, Detroit and Boston. Despite authorization, service from Detroit was not initiated.Several different flights were used to inaugurate the new services. Boeing 747 equipment was used on all the flights except to Brussels which utilized DC-8s. Service to Brussels from Boston was inaugurated on June 2, 1979. Official cachets were not authorized for any of the new services. This cover was carried on the inaugural Braniff International flight from the Boston, Massachusetts Airport Mail Facility to Brussels, Belgium (where it was backstamped) and is listed in The American Air Mail Catalogue as BN-F60f.Braniff ceased air carrier operations in May 1982 because of high fuel prices, credit card interest rates and extreme competition from the large trunk carriers and the new airline startups created by the Airline Deregulation Act of December 1978. Two later airlines used the Braniff name: the Hyatt Hotels-backed Braniff, Inc. in 1983–1989, and Braniff International Airlines, Inc. in 1991–1992.
