BRITISH IMPERIALISM CARTOON "Miss Niger" 1897 [BENIN EXPEDITION?] Niger River?

Description: British Punch magazine -- from 1841 to 2002, the magazine cast a satirical eye on life in Britain. It charted the interests, concerns and frustrations of the country and today it stands as an invaluable resource not just as cartoon art and satire, but as primary source material for historians. Illustrator: Linley Sambourne, from British Punch humor/satire magazine, October 23, 1897, pulled from the magazine, not a modern reproduction. Size 8 x 10 1/2 inches. Condition: excellent -- bright and clean, no handling wear, page lays flat for easy framing; backside has unrelated text with some show-through on the facing side (please look closely) as published.WAKING UP! John Bull: "Hullo. While I've been asleep, that confounded Mossoo has been making p to my African Lilly!"-- [one year after this cartoon was published] --The Anglo-French Convention of 1898, full name the Convention between Great Britain and France for the Delimitation of their respective Possessions to the West of the Niger, and of their respective Possessions and Spheres of Influence to the East of that River, also known as the Niger Convention, was an agreement between Britain and France that concluded the partition of West Africa between the colonial powers by finally fixing the borders in the disputed areas of Northern Nigeria. It was signed in Paris on 14 June 1898, ratifications were exchanged on 13 June 1899.BACKGROUND ?? I can find no references to this cartoon(Feedback welcome). The Benin Expedition of 1897 was a punitive expedition by a British force of 1,200 men under Admiral Sir Harry Rawson in response to the ambush of a previous British-led party under Acting Consul General James Phillips (which had left all but two men dead). Rawson's troops captured and burned Benin City, bringing to an end the west African Kingdom of Benin.I have other hard-to-find original Punch cartoon illustrations for sale; combine orders with no extra shipping fees. Punch , a magazine of humor and satire, ran from 1841-2002. A very British institution renowned internationally for its wit and irreverence, it helped to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration. QUESTIONS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME
