Description: This is an elegant French Antique Gants (or Glove) Box. It is made of simply gorgeous wood veneers, (We are guessing a variety of Rosewood.) with a simple Boulle brass king wood inlaid cartouche on its top. Around the top it is edged with the same type of wood. Please take a moment and examine the photos closely as they give its best description. Inside, it is lined with a red silk fabric that is called French Knot, Tuck and Tufted, and it is in the best condition of any antique lining in any antique gants box we have seen. Simply beautiful, virtually without wear, tear, or staining. The lock works smoothly with a replacement key and tassel that compliments the red silk interior. It is large for a gants box measuring 13 x 4.33 x 3.5 inches and weighing 1 pound, 11 ounces. Gants Boxes came into favor in France to store valuable kid and lace gloves in the mid to late 1800's. Eventually the boxes designed to store the gloves became works of art in themselves. We are guessing this one to be from the 1890's to early 1900's but we have no information on its maker or previous owners. The Boulle Inlay is simple yet very nice but the wood veneers, which are in wonderful condition, and its inside lining make it so extra special.
