He First Exhibited At The Royal Academy in 1780. His Earlier Interest Was For Landscape But Necessity Urged Him To Move To The more Lucrative Work Of Portrait Painting. At Once Successful He Had Throughout His Life The Most Fashionable And Wealthy Sitters And Was The gReatest Rival Of The Kings Painter Thomas Lawrence. The Prince Of Wales Especially Patronised Him, And Many Of his Finest Portraits Hang In The State Apartments Of St. James Palace.
