Description: Vintage BEMIS & CALL Company Adjustable Monkey WrenchWith Wood Handle B&C monkeywrench with wooden handle inserts, stamped with the B&C trademark logo and with"Bemis & Call Company" and "Springfield, Mass. Made inU.S.A." The overall length is 8 inches, and the maximum opening is1.25 inches. Functions fully and smoothly. Has only been lightly cleaned and oiled. Bemis & Call was one of the earliest manufactures ofwrenches and machinist tools in the United States. Stephon Chapin Bemis beganhis career in his uncle’s store at the age of 14. He then moved to Harvard in1821 and returned to Chicopee in 1822 to open a business with his uncle knownas Pease & Bemis. Pease withdrew in 1824 at which time he formed apartnership with Sylvester Chapin and then Chester W Chapin, both known asChapin & Bemis. He formed the Willimansett Manufacturing Company in 1829producing hardware and small tools. This company was well respected andprosperous. He sold the factory in 1844 and moved to Springfield,Massachusetts. Here he partnered with Amos call who had been his apprentice inthe Willimansett Company. In 1855, the partnership was incorporated as theBemis & Call Hardware and Tool Company.
