Description: Presented for your consideration, a Vintage Mid Century Modern Georg Briard Rpund Casserole Warming Cradle Stand— Replacement Cradle Only. Georg Briard (b. 1917 d. 2005) Born Jakub Brojdo in Ekaterninoslav, Eastern Ukraine and immigrating to the United States in 1937 where he adopted Jascha Brojdo as his name. Serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, after being discharged he went onto earning a MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago. Moving to New York he commenced working with Max Wille whom he met at art school. A humble beginning, Brojdo started painting metal serving trays and Wille suggested “Georges Briard” as a pseudonym for his more commercial pieces. Of course, “Georges Briard” possessed a more “mass appealing” and commercial sounding brand name especially with the French derivation. With his initial forays into decorating glass tablewares he purchased blanks from Libbey or Anchor Hocking. He later licenced his name and thusly the glass companies would produce his designs. The “Georges Briard” brand of housewares became wildly popular during the 1950’s through the 1970’s. In 2004 Briard was awarded the Frank S. Child Lifetime Achievement Award by The Society of Glass and Ceramics Decorators in honour of his significant contribution to the industry. Listing Description The warming cradle or chafing cradle component to Georges Briard round 2 quart casserole serving pieces by Anchor Hocking. With its clean Mid Century Modern lines, this chafing cradle is constructed of gold-toned metal with three tapered wood feet capped in cold accents. Atop the ring where the glass or aluminum casserole insert would be seated are three metal beads that stabilise the insert. Centrally, a shallow metal cup is positioned, a receptacle for canned alcohol based fuel (Sterno) or a candle to keep foods warm during service. A vintage piece expect wear commensurate to age and usage but nothing that would detract from the appearance or serviceability of this piece. There is a bit of discolouration within the metal cup that contains the heat source. ***Again, this listing is for the replacement chafing cradle ONLY and DOES NOT include the actual serving insert. Approximate measurements; 4 7/8” in height x a7 3/4” overall diameter. Smoke and pet-free home. Will of course be very carefully parceled to ensure safe arrival to its destination.
