History of palladium:Oddly enough palladium, unlike platinum, makes up a small chapter in the history of jewelry. Although William Hyde Wollaston and Smithson Tennant correctly identified palladium as a new element in 1802, it was not commonly used in jewelry until World War II. In 1939, platinum was declared a strategic metal and reserved for military use therefore vaulting palladium as its replacement. Palladium use was not restricted and was soon promoted in the jewelry industry as a practical alternative to platinum.In comparison to platinum, palladium was lighter in weight (making it more comfortable to wear) and quite malleability (making stone setting easier).
