Each hoop is attached to a wire that has a sterling half bead for added interest and both are 2 inches in length inclusive of the wire and 1 1/8 inches in diameter. They are in very good vintage condition and although unmarked the earrings have tested for sterling. These rare but well-known Navajo designed earrings depict the Peyote Water Bird. What is the significance of the peyote water bird, you may ask? As the quintessential water bird, the Navajo belief is that it isa symbol of life, a messenger, and very important in ceremonial healing practices. The Water Bird design, which was a Plains Indian motif celebrating the rain that gave life, the rivers that carried the water, and the process of renewal, has been associated with the Native American Church since the early 1900s.
