Back in those days Willapa Bay was known as Shoalwater Bay. The Willapa Bay plunger looks like a strange fit for this part of the United States, but it descended from working sailboats that had earned their place supplying oysters to the gourmands of the eastern seaboard and the midwest. Because of this the plungers were the logical choice of boat in the 1850's to supply Shoalwater Bay oysters to the markets in San Francisco and Portland, Oregon.
